The Vulcaneifel

The (Vulcan)Eifel

The Vulcaneifel is the southeastern part of the Eifel. The origin of its name is found in the vulcano activity that formed the scenery. Het heeft zijn naam te danken aan de vulkanische activiteit die het landschap heeft gevormd. You cab still recognize this in the landscape in the form of its craters and lakes called "maaren".

A part of this craters are no more hollow fields complete filled and grown over. Others have filled themselves with water and form these "maaren". The larger ones are found around Daun and Manderscheid.

Hiking and biking

The Eifel is wel suited for bikers, mountainbikers and hikers. Everywhere you find trails that suited your needs and difficulty level.

A real hiking challenge is the Eifelsteig, 313 km crosscountry through the Eifel (Aachen to Trier). You can also hike separate tracks the so called partnertracks. Some are part of the Eifelsteig others are independent.

Cities and villages

The Eifel has many beautiful cities and villages. The obvious like Cologne with its Dom and Trier wirh the Porta Nigra, the Dom, Keizertherme and Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk(church). But also Koblenz were the Rhine and Mossele join. Were the vinyards with the grapes grow along the river valleys against teh hills.

There are many historic villages like Bad Münstereifel, Daun. Manderscheid. Places with fortresses and ruins, historic cores but also shoppingexpereinces and other sights

Zoo, wild- and birdparks

Germany has fast and beautiful nature reserves and with them great wildparks. Ranging from a few till hundreds of acres. The Eifel has it fair share.

For example the Adler- und Wolfspark(eagle- & wolfpark) near Kasselburg/Gerolstein. And the Wild- & Erlebnispark(wild- &experience park) in Daun, but also at Mechernich and Hellental. Near Lünebach/Prüm you will find the "Eifelzoo"

Snowtyres in Germany

In Germany motorvehicles needs to be equiped with smowtyres during winter circumstances. This rules also applies to foreigners. Winters circumstances according to the German law are: sleet, smoothness by snow, snowmud of smoothness trough ice or ripening. As a driver of a vehicle you are responsible to have the appropiate tire mounted onto your vehicle. The smowtyres net to comply with the requirements wich are described in the European Guideline 92/23/EEG. A trailer or caravan do not need to be equiped with snowtyres. All season tyres are allowed as long they provide the M+S logo.
